Tree Services We Offer in Harristown

Harristown borders Decatur on the west, so it's one of the quickest drives we make. We usually book a walk-around here the same week you call, and last year that happened on 9 out of 10 requests.

Close Enough for a Same-Week Look

Downtown Decatur is about 7 miles east on US 36. A crew lead can usually stand in your yard within a few days, and Harristown storm calls get to the front of the line fast because we're so close.

Comparing quotes? Have the other bids handy when we come. If you ask us, a second opinion should be honest even when it isn't ours, so we'll tell you whether the other plan makes sense.

How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in Harristown, IL?

Tree removal in Harristown usually costs $400 to $1,900 in 2026. Small trees in open yards land near the bottom of that range. A big cottonwood over the house runs $1,500 to $3,500. If it needs a crane, expect $2,500 to $6,500. Hauling and raking are always included.

Harristown removalTypical price
Small ornamental or fruit tree$400 to $650
Dead ash, reachable from the street$700 to $1,400
Cottonwood or silver maple near the house$1,200 to $2,400
Large oak over the roof, roped down$1,800 to $3,500
Crane removal, no truck access$2,500 to $6,500

Cottonwoods surprise people on price. They get huge fast, the wood is heavy when it's wet, and the logs aren't worth much, so most of it gets chipped or hauled. Black walnut is the opposite. Straight walnut logs are worth something, and we've set a few aside for local woodworkers when the owner asked.

River-Bottom Trees and Upland Hardwoods

South of the village the land slopes toward the Sangamon River. At Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park, about 4 miles south, the state describes river bottoms of cottonwood, sycamore and silver maple, with black walnut, oaks and hickories up on the higher ground. Harristown yards grow the same mix.

Cottonwoods and Sycamores

These grow tall and wide on damp ground. Older cottonwoods even drop big limbs on calm summer afternoons, not just in storms, which catches people off guard. If one hangs over your roof or a parked car, shortening those long limbs costs less than fixing whatever they land on.

Black Walnut and Oak

Both are worth saving when they're healthy. We only prune oaks in winter, to stay clear of oak wilt. Walnut roots give off a chemical that some garden plants can't stand, and in our experience that's the most common reason people ask us to take one out near a vegetable bed.

Old Trees by the Rail Line

Harristown grew up along the old Wabash Railroad main line, and some lots near the tracks still have trees planted generations ago. Old doesn't mean dangerous. Think of an old pickup: it can run great, but you still check the frame. Hollow trunks and mushrooms at the base mean we look closer.

Types of Tree Service We Offer in Harristown

Sectional Removal

Where a tree stands between two houses, our climber cuts it from the top down and lowers each piece on a rope. On a recent job south of US 36 we took a 70-foot maple out from between two homes that way, and nothing touched a roof, a deck or the fence.

Crane Removal

When a huge tree leans over the house and there's no safe spot to lower pieces, a crane parked in the street lifts each section over the roof. It's usually a one-day job, start to sweep-up.

Trimming and Deadwooding

Most Harristown trims are about clearance: limbs off the roof, the driveway and the line running to the house. If a limb is rubbing the Ameren service drop, we get the power company to disconnect it first. We've cleared more than 20 of those service lines out here.

After a West-Side Storm

The May 16, 2025 windstorm put a large tree across West Main Street in Decatur and knocked out power to more than 4,000 Ameren customers in Macon County. Harristown sits right in the path of storms rolling in from the west. When one hits, we clear trees off houses and driveways first, then work through the yards. Storm cleanup in Harristown usually wraps up within a few days of the worst calls.

Heading south on US 51 instead? We also work in Macon, where the jobs run from old town lots to farmstead windbreaks, often on the same day.

Questions we hear

Tree Service FAQs for Harristown

Is a black walnut tree worth money?

Sometimes. A straight, clean walnut log at least 16 inches across and 8 feet long can catch a sawmill's or a woodworker's eye. Yard trees often hide nails, wire or forks that knock the value down. If you want to try selling it, we'll cut the best log long and set it aside.

Why does my cottonwood drop limbs on calm days?

Big cottonwoods and some maples can drop heavy limbs on hot, still afternoons. Arborists call it summer branch drop, and honestly nobody fully knows why it happens. The long, heavy limbs reaching sideways are usually the ones that go, so shortening those back to a side branch cuts the risk a lot.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Harristown?

Usually not for a tree on your own lot. Trees along the road right of way can belong to the village or the township, so ask the village office before anyone cuts one. On the walk-around we'll point out any tree that looks like it sits on the public side.

How long will I wait after a big storm?

A tree on the house, a car or across your only way out usually gets a crew the same day. Broken trees that aren't threatening anything come next, often within the week. When you call, we'll give you a real time estimate, not a hopeful one, because waiting is easier when you know.

Can you leave the chips?

Sure. Chips stay or go, your call. Fair warning: a full chip truck makes a big pile, so pick the spot before we dump it. Plenty of Harristown folks spread them on garden paths and flower beds, and around the base of the trees they kept.

    Tree removal
Two huge maples over our 1920s house. They roped every piece down and the only sign they were here was the fresh sawdust smell. Price was exactly what they wrote.
  • Dennis H.Long Creek
    Storm damage
Called at 11pm with an oak limb on the garage. Kyle's crew had a tarp on before 1am and came back at 8 to finish. They gave me photos for the insurance claim too.
  • Priya S.Mount Zion
    Stump grinding
Seven stumps ground through our side gate with that little tracked machine. Lawn barely marked. We seeded the spots that weekend.

    Tree trimming
I asked for a removal and Kyle told me the tree was healthy and just needed a good thinning. Saved me about a thousand dollars and the shade.

    Brush clearing
They cleared the fence line behind our rentals on Pershing Road, chipped everything and left it cleaner than it's been in years. Easy to work with as a landlord.
  • Sharon K.Maroa

Dead ash right over the driveway. They used the bucket truck instead of climbing it and explained why. Done by lunch.
